Nowadays it feels like if you're not, take a deep breath for this one:
A first-class graduate distinction grade masters MBE starting ethical entrepreneur political activist YouTuber budding fitness enthusiast master chef software developer by age 20... you've missed the boat.
Chop and interchange the milestones to suit you, but the sentiment remains the same.
So how do you stay motivated when you are wearing so many hats?
Tip 1: Acknowledge the achievement and joy in every experience
Well we've all heard the saying "You can't pour from an empty cup" in relation to looking after our mental health. But have you ever considered that the same applies to the number of hats you are able to wear?
You're a recent graduate who's just started a 3 year graduate programme
You're full of energy and ideas and have started a company in line with your dreams too
You're invested in your personal development and doing well to learn more about financial literacy, personal growth, and how to create generational wealth
Three bullet points may not seem like a lot on the page, but trust me trying to maintain just those 3 hats at even 75% capacity can be hard. Now try reading the same scenario again, and acknowledging your achievement and the joy you feel because of it.
You're a recent graduate who's just started a 3 year graduate programme (congrats by the way because this job market is tough).
You're full of energy and ideas and have started a company in line with your dreams too (congrats again, because someone else was too scared to take that leap).
You're invested in your personal development and doing well to learn more about financial literacy, personal growth, and how to create generational wealth (triple congrats to you because according to consumer research by Kantar Media, 49% of adults haven't picked up a book in over 12 months).
Switch out the examples to make it more applicable to you, but the sentiment remains the same. You don't have to publicly announce your wins, but acknowledging them to yourself is a great way to keep up your motivation when you are wearing many hats.
Tip 2: Create a "You've got this" jar
I love writing things down on paper, so my constant reminder is in the form of a physical jar that I've filled with motivational quotes from the bible. If that's something that resonates with you, screenshot the bullet points below:
When you're upset read John 14
When you feel weak read Psalm 18: 1 - 29
When you feel lonely read Psalm 23
When you feel worried read Matthew 8: 19 - 31
When you feel anxious read Philippians 4: 4 - 9
When you feel unhappy read Colossians 3: 12 - 17
When you feel depressed read Psalm 27
When you need direction read Psalm 73: 21 - 26
When you're discouraged with work read Psalm 126
If it's not bible quotes, it could easily be motivational quotes that resonate with you that you find on Pinterest.
Tip 3: Surround yourself with the motivation you wish to achieve
Whether it's "Birds of a feather flock together", "You are what you eat", or "Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are", we all know that our environment plays a big role in our lives.
This doesn't mean you need a complete overhaul of your friendship group. But you can start with the little things. Try following at least one social media page that posts time management or productivity tips this week. Be intentional about surrounding yourself with the motivation you wish to achieve, and you'll see your motivation to remain disciplined increase in no time.
If these tips don't float your boat, try the ones I've posted on Instagram (@successwstephuk) or LinkedIn (Success With Steph) instead. :)
